Bomb Gone

Bomb Gone

The atomic bomb                                 The men lined up against the wall                          The men in their uniform

The word “bomb” keeps echoing in my mind. I really can’t believe we’re going to witness one! I stow away the last sack of heavy white sugar in a wooden box. Whew, that’s all done now. I wipe the sweat away from my forrid with my hand. I grab the last pair of safety goggles in the storage room located next to the cabin rooms. I take a peek in my cabin. I wish I could go back to bed but it’s not like I get enough sleep anyways. All these jobs are making my head hurt. I place the safety goggles on my eyes and adjust the straps at the back of my head to fit snug.

“8:25,” the broadcaster speaks. “Hands sit down facing starboard.” It’s finally time to observe the explosive. I rush out of the small hallway heading to the portside area of the boat. All of the men line up against the wall of the boat as a chill runs down my spine. I can’t wait to see the astounding reds and oranges blooming from the bomb. I sit in a crouching position against the wall as I take a glance at the darkened portside screens. I wonder what they’re doing.

“8:29, 60 seconds to the burst.” Lub dub, lub dub. My heart pulsates as I imagine the mushroom cloud sprouting from dust. I fidget with my hands to pass the time and take a nap. “3, 2, 1.” I finally wake up from my short slumber. “Bomb Gone! 1, 2, 3..” Wait a second, am I burning? I look down at my hands. My eyes were closed! I actually open my eyes and take off my goggles. “14, 15. Take goggles off and face burst.” Standing up, a mushroom cloud sprouts from dust and the arrays of reds and yellows are striking. But my blood still boils.

Hours pass by and the colours are still lingering in my thoughts.. In the corner of my eye.

Advocate for the Poor

How can I be an advocate kai korero like Jesus?

I can be an advocate like Jesus by being patient with others. I can listen to the elderly when they talk and comfort the mournful when they are somber. I can donate money to the homeless and support those who are on benefits, those who are disabled, unemployed, beggars, and the children on the streets.

A Letter of Advice

15.5.23

From Jamie

To Auntie Maraea

Dear Auntie Maraea,

Mum and I haven’t seen you at Mass last Sunday. We really miss your smiling face and those freshly-made biscuits, especially the chocolate ones! But onto the point, you haven’t been yourself lately, and I was wondering what I could do to help? I could sweep your floors or make you coffee for afternoon tea! I would do anything to see your smiling face again, you mean so much to me as my auntie. Dad and I are going to make a cake for you so we’re coming to your place to deliver it tomorrow in the afternoon. One piece of advice for you is to always pray during hard times. Jesus is always here whether we need Him or not. Anyways, we miss you and see you tomorrow!

Lots of love, Jamie

BLAKE NZ – VR

Today we had an underwater experience- without getting wet!

BLAKE NZ – VR was named after Peter Blake; an adventurous man who sailed around the world 5 times, and won many gold medals. He realised that the water was polluted, sea creatures were acting strange, and sailed around the world to alert people. He died a legend at the age of 53.

Thomas, our teacher for today working with BLAKE NZ – VR showed us the waters around NZ through virtual reality. We ‘went’ to Hauraki Gulf and saw the majestic sea creatures such as Southern Right whales and Spinner dolphins. Thomas explained to us that humans can affect these creatures with sound pollution, pollution, climate change and other negative impacts.

Through the VR mask, I saw kina(sea urchins), coral, mangō(sharks) and rainbow fish. There was also a filthy place in the water. The water was all green and murky like a swamp. Tyres and rubbish lay under the contaminated marshland. The photo taken during the 360 video on the right is the City on Water, Auckland Central.

This adventure we went on around the waters of New Zealand was awesome and fascinating to learn more about our seas.

I learnt that we have to be more careful with not only sea creatures but all life. I thank Thomas from BLAKE NZ – VR for teaching us about our cherished waters.

EPro8 Playground

On the 7th of May for our last EPro8 Challenge, we created a playground.

(Whole class playground on the right, my team’s playground on the left)

For my team’s playground; The Almighty E’s, we built a merry go round type of equipment on the left. It could spin 360 degrees. The swings in the middle could move back and forth. The last piece of playground equipment we built was a see-saw. It moves up and down, depending on the weight to move it on both sides.

Our class combined all our equipment to make a big playground. It was really fun building the playgrounds and we thank EPro8 for giving us this opportunity.

A Day of EPro8

Today and Friday last week, our class took a shot at creating a dump truck as an EPro8 challenge.

If you don’t already know what EPro 8 is, it is an engineering program for schools to help with math, P.E. and science. But let’s get that aside, most importantly it’s fun! We get to create awesome projects using the EPro8 equipment stored in a box which includes aluminum rods, gears, axles, rope, nuts and bolts, screw drivers, wheels, and red and blue joiners.

The dump truck my team; Almighty Engineers built was unfortunately not completed due to lack of focus.

I really enjoyed building another build which was a waterproof hut. I am very thankful to the EPro8 team for sending us the opportunity to learn parts of engineering.
