SLJ Thanks

Thank you Summer Learning Journey team, my teachers, classmates, friends and family for the wonderful year I had. To my future year 8’s, keep working hard and you can do anything you put your mind to. To everyone, enjoy the rest of your holiday and God bless!!

Here are some of my favorite moments of this summer Learning journey.

Fun Art – Step it Up!!!

I have created a Google Draw of red pandas watching another red panda on a trampoline. This was a fun, funny and easy task to do as the last posted SLJ task.

I want to say thanks for the SLJ commenters, my fellow bloggers, SLJ creators, and supervisors. This year’s SLJ I will never forget!!!

Did you know giving animals human characteristics is called anthropomorphism? Did you ALSO know red pandas stand up to intimidate others and to make them look bigger?

What do you think the Red Panda on the trampoline is thinking?

Hybrid Sports – Kick Start

For this activity, I created my own hybrid sport – rollerblading + basketball. I call it basket-blading! The hardest part of this activity was making my own sport. I was set on using rollerblades and hool-a-hoop, but it was really difficult for me.

The goal is to throw as many ping-pong balls into a basket before the timer of 1 minute ends. Try to break your own records or challenge your friends to see who’s faster!

I put a timer in the bottom corner of the screen so you could track the time.

What would you call this hybrid sport?

Connecting with Your Whenua – Kick Start

I have created a nature collage using pictures of nature in my backyard. I used the polyline tool to trace around a tree I made to cover up some parts of the picture, making the pictures look like a tree. The pictures I took of were a guava tree, feijoa tree, the sun, and palm tree leaves.

Facts about your Whenua(nature):

  1. Our Whenua has been here before us and will be here after us. We need to protect it for the future generations to come
  2. Our Whenua improves our well-being. It is living like us, and it gives us a sense of calmness and resources too

Do you have any other facts about our Whenua?

Sunny Sundials – Step it Up

For this activity, I have made a sundial using some thin cardboard. I have marked 10 am, but realised the dial was supposed to be facing south. I changed its position and wrote 10:30. The black line marks 10:30.

The first picture is of 10:30 am and the second 11 am.

What I found interesting was that you have to point the gnomon(triangle or pin in the middle of the circle) North or South, depending on where you are. I pointed it south, because New Zealand in the South of the world.

What do you find interesting about sundials?

Anemone is not the Enemy – Step-it-Up!

I have created a sea anemone using Google Drawings. Here are 3 facts anemones:

  1. It is not a plant, but a living and breathing creature
  2. The anemone’s mouth is on the top of its body, surrounded by stinging tentacles
  3. Clownfish are immune to the anemone’s poison due to a mucous coating – allowing them protection from harm

Do you know any other anemone facts?

Notan Art – Step-it-Up!

I have created a Notan artwork using Google Drawings. The objects in my artwork are a tree which is in the center of the artwork, leaves around it in a variety of sizes and a field of flowers.

The Japanese Notan is a type of artwork that circles around the concept of positive and negative, for example the concept of ying and yang.

Can you guess my artwork’s theme?

Notan Art – Kick Start

I have created Notan Art using Google Drawings. I created this art inspired by things that are happy and funny. This activity was really easy to do and also looks cool.

Did you know that the Notan concept illustrates how positive and negative space meet, and that one cannot exist without the other? Like ying and yang, day and night. The way the objects are placed, are to create a feeling of balance within the artwork.

Have you ever seen or created a Notan artwork?

Cipher and Code – Step-It-Up

I have created an emoji cipher which conceals a message. This activity is my favorite so far, because I like solving puzzles and the info was very helpful. It also reminded me of a book I read relating to the message which is hidden.

Can you figure out the message concealed?

Cipher and Codes – Kick Start

I have created 2 codes that tell you my 2 favorite places I like to visit in summer. One of my favorite types of codes is the Morse code because you can tell something not only by talking, but by sound, like a beep or a signal like a wink. This activity reminded me of one of the SLJ code activities I did last year using SCOPE and Pig Pen code to hide a message.

Can you find out what message they conceal?
