The Wishgranter

Falling asleep, the last thing I hear are young and old voices in unity.

I open my eyes into a different world, with endless colours no one could have ever imagined, and smiling faces shining brighter than the sun. An upbeat person shoots their head in my direction. This person was wearing funky, exotic-coloured clothing, and had a hairstyle not even an insane person could have thought of. I don’t think this ‘person’ is a human, but who cares? This is my type of place. The ‘person’ gives me a hand signal to follow them. They get a head start and my curiosity runs over my common sense. I soon run after too.

We run down a steep valley, but when I look back all the pigmented colours fade away. Dull and lonely for any being. Something pulls me away and breaks my focus with the black and white. I turn my head reluctantly and face the person making a ‘no’ action. I nod and follow their steps. I wonder what is beyond my monotonous view. Slowly our step’s flow increases speed. We move through the forest with navy grass and pink trees -with the trunks pink too!

Leaping like a giant through pink tufts of hair, my attention goes to a sparkly gold fountain with an iridescent shine on the water a few metres towards us. I assume we’ve stopped at our destination, when our momentum is lost. The person pats their hair down at the sides, and shows me the palm of their hand. “What is it?” I say with an unknowing look on my face. I blink and poof! A gold coin appears out of thin air. How is this possible? Wizardry is real in this world I guess. They toss the coin in my hands and I barely manage to catch it. I struggle to juggle it back and forth in both of my hands and finally catch it with one.

The person directs me to toss it into the glimmering water in the gold fountain. “Wish.” They say. There is not one person talking now, it is multiple. A circle of colourful people such as the one I encountered, but all different in one way or another. The words turn to chant and pressure increases and I finally toss the coin into the iridescent pool, making a wish. I wish to see my family, but most importantly my parents. Real parents. Ms. Jones’ and the other staff are cool, but I want my own real family. The coin makes a small plop into the water and slowly submerges under the radiant colours.

I open my eyes and to my surprise- and delight my family is in front of me, under a pink blossom tree- which is rare in our country but that is not the point. I burst out in tears and run to my family. My real family. “Mum! Dad!” I sob and squeeze them tight as a blossom falls on my head. I close my eyes and thank the colourful beings and question if they were actually real, but everything does feel real like the hugs I gave my parents and the coin the person tossed me. I open my eyes and prepare to ask my parents where they’ve been and how they are in heaven.

But I enter the real world and wake up with Ms. Jones’ nose in my face. “Honey, are you alright? You’ve slept through the whole ride!” Ms. Jones says in a concerned manner. “Yup, I’m alright.” I say wiping a tear from my cheek. Ms. Jones looks at my head unknowingly and takes a small blossom from the top of my head. “Now where did this come from?” Ms. Jones says with a hearty laugh. It can’t be.. that’s the blossom that fell on my head! So everything was real. I give her a smile and say, “Well, time for another nap.” Ms. Jones’ laugh echoes and I re-enter the place I love. It’s with my family and the col

Stalag Luft III Map

Johnny Pohe was a Maori pilot who wanted new adventures and to take part in WWII. Pohe was held prisoner at this camp.

This map is a German prisoner-of-war camp for Airmen who were Officers, called Stalag Luft III.

Dick, Tom and Harry were the escape routes they used to flee the camp. It took 600 men and 1 year to build to all come collapsing down on the escapees at the time of escape. 73 men were captured to await a brutal death. Only 3 men escaped back to England.

Kia O Rahi

Yesterday we had a Kia O Rahi tournament. We spent most of our time playing Kia O Rahi on our fields at school from 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Our school played in our houses; Rata(red), Totara(yellow), Kauri(green) and Rimu(blue). I played for Rimu in two rounds of Kia O Rahi.

The Kia O Rahi games I played in were really rough and tough, but I still enjoyed it. I love hearing the rip sound as I pull the tags off of my opponent. I’ve of course, made a name for myself. “The Ripper.” To sum up this paragraph, the games were entertaining for myself and the other houses watching.

After the games and the winners were already announced, our team was third, but we tried our best and had fun.

A Letter to France

Dear Prime Minister Jacques Chirac,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you to discuss the matter of nuclear testing in the Pacific. I assume you know what I am writing to you about, and as well as the consequences of nuclear testing. Radiation, cancer, dyspnea, death of the environment along with our livestock, as well as the population of people in the Pacific which are only a fraction of consequences if explosives continue to be released. I am urging you to cancel the upcoming nuclear tests on the Pacific Islands. I believe we can solve this matter respectfully and responsibly, rather than with war. I have faith in both of us, Monsieur Jacques Chirac.

I eagerly await your decision.
